INTERACT CARWASH

The Interact gang from Parkland Secondary was out washing cars as a fundraiser on Friday, April 20th and Sunday, April 22. When I dropped in at the Mary Winspear to have my car made squeaky clean on Sunday, there were four cars getting the undivided attention of Rick and the students at the time. They did a great job!

ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY

Our club participates in the Ministry of Transportation's "Adopt-A-Highway" program—more familiarly known as "Adopt-A-Ditch" by club members, as the majority of their time picking up the trash strewn along the Pat Bay Highway is actually spent in ditches.

Our most recent ditch-diving took place on April 7th, under the leadership of Lloyd Kruger. Lloyd reports:

Although the threat of rain persisted, the current edition of the ‘Dirty Ditch Team’ boldly stepped out with trash bags in one hand, and spikes in the other hand. This year’s team members included Maria & Meredith, Ginny & Peter, Marie & daughter Michelle capably assisted by Mathew & Ben, Pat & Judy, and Charlie & Rick, with Rick’s daughter Caitlin. Absentees not only missed a pleasant walk in the ‘Park’; they missed the fellowship of discussing some of the wondrous treasures that were picked up along the way. These included a T.V., a shopping cart, a squirrel, assorted credit cards, some re-bar, and many other discards. I wish to thank everyone who participated in the project. You may not agree with the philosophy of this project, but there was no denying that those who took part enjoyed the afternoon.

New Members

Sidney by the Sea Rotary Club is pleased to welcome two new members to our ranks. In March, Bruce Burns and Melinda Whitaker were inducted into the club by Assistant District Governor Judy Byron.

Bruce is a semi-retired Chemical Engineer who previously worked for Stuart Lang at Tembec Industries in Cranbrook. Stuart sponsored Bruce's application for membership but was not able to attend his installation. Melinda, sponsored by Michele Holmes, is a professional jazz singer, and has recently moved to the Saanich Peninsula to assist her aging parents.
